WASHINGTON PRAISES GOV’S PLAN TO PROTECT PA’S CHILDREN

Washington

HARRISBURG, September 21 – Sen. LeAnna M. Washinton (D-Philadelphia) said today that she is encouraged by the Governor’s plan to protect Pennsylvania children from sex offenders.

“It is a disturbing reality, but there are individuals out there preying on our youths,” Washington said.  “It is encouraging that the governor recognizes this and is taking steps to bring those individuals to justice.”

Rendell’s plan calls for mandatory sentences for every major sex offense. Under the proposal, violent sex offenders who rape children would get a minimum term of 25 years in prison.

"It is time for us to get tough on those who hurt and exploit children,” Washington said.  “By imposing stiffer penalties on convicted sex offenders, we will ensure that they don’t have the opportunity to rape more children.”

Washington, a long time advocate for the welfare of children, is working on several key legislative proposals aimed at stopping the abuse of children.

Senator Washington said she is also pleased to see the state minimum wage getting attention in the Governor’s fall agenda.

“It is past time that the minimum wage was raised,” Washington said.  “As the cost of living steadily rises, those individuals making minimum wage should be able to keep up.”

The governor is proposing the minimum wage be raised to $6.25 an hour by January 2006 and to $7.15 an hour by January 2007.
