WASHINGTON TO PROMOTE AWARENESS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Washington

HARRISBURG, October 26 – State Senator LeAnna M. Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) today joined Senator Jane Orie (R-Pittsburgh), Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll, and other legislators to stress the need to prevent domestic violence in Pennsylvania and encourage more health care professionals to be aware of signs of abuse.

“Domestic abuse is growing more prevalent throughout this country,” Washington said.  “A woman is beaten every 18 seconds in America.  Something must be done to stop these horrendous crimes against women, men and children.”

Health care professionals, law enforcement officials, and domestic violence organizations were also at the event, which marked October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Washington who is a 30-year survivor of domestic violence said, "I know all too well what domestic violence looks like and feels like.  When I talk about it, I can still remember.  It's something that I can never forget."

Washington added that this day is set aside to encourage and support doctors and health care professionals in their efforts to detect and prevent domestic violence and to provide help to victims.

“We must practice due diligence and watch for the signs of domestic violence,” Washington said.  “These women may not ask for help, it is our job to inform and support these women.  There is never a reason to be beaten.”

Washington added that more than 100,000 women, men and children receive shelter, counseling and advocacy each year through a network of domestic violence programs in Pennsylvania.
