BUDGET MAKES THE COMMITMENT TO PENNSYLVANIA’S CITIZENS

Washington

HARRISBURG, February 8 – State Sen. LeAnna M. Washington (D-Phila.) provided the following comments on the Governor’s 2006-07 Budget:

“The Commonwealth’s continued commitment to the most vulnerable members of our society has been evidenced by the budget offered by the Governor today.

“I am encouraged by the Governor’s support to education programs as well as to programs that benefit seniors, children, and families – with no new taxes.

“Expanding the CHIP program so every child in the state will be covered is something that will ensure our children’s future.

“Additionally, the proposed increase in K-12 education funding of $517 million, increased funding for public libraries by more than $14 million and funding for community colleges will demonstrate a real commitment to an investment in our future.

“I too am pleased to see the enactment of the PACE plus program that will save seniors thousands of   dollars a year in prescription drug costs, and ensure that PACE beneficiaries keep the same level of coverage they have enjoyed.

"I remain concerned about the full impact of Federal cuts and the impact of these cuts on programs serving women, children and seniors."
