WASHINGTON: STATE BUDGET MAKES KEY INVESTMENTS IN PA CHILDREN

Washington

HARRISBURG, July 2 – State Senator Leanna M. Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) today said the following about the newly adopted 2006-07 State Budget:

“I am pleased with the outcome of this budget. It is a budget that puts children first by providing more funding for health, welfare and educational initiatives for children.

“With $4.1 million state dollars going to the ‘Cover All Kids’ initiative, 15,000 more children will have access to healthcare next year.”

Washington added that the budget will provide more funding to social services programs for children.

“Child welfare programs will receive $43 million more than last year’s budget.  This funding is especially key as the TANF Child Welfare Transition Program will not see a reduction in funds.  With so many children dependant on this program, it is a relief that the 2006-07 budget makes provisions for this valuable program.”

“In addition, more funding is being poured into Child Care Services, half of which will be used to subsidize child care services to 1,861 low-income children.”

“I am very pleased that children were made the foundation of this spending plan.”

Washington added that seniors also benefit largely from the 2006-07 budget.

“Pennsylvania has always made seniors a priority, this budget is proof of that,” Washington said.  “This spending plan accomplishes that with several funding increases to programs that support and benefit seniors, including medical assistance and senior care programs.”
