WASHINGTON INVITES CONSTITUENTS TO THE 11th ANNUAL WADSWORTH DAY

Washington

PHILADELPHIA, August 9 – State Senator LeAnna M. Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) today invited the community to join her in celebrating the 11th Annual Wadsworth Day on Saturday, September 16, 2006.

The theme for this year’s Wadsworth Day is “Education is the Key.”

“We want to stress the importance of education in strengthening our community,” Washington said. “We value education and recognize it as a critical ingredient in the economic and social mobility.

“Without a good education, you are limiting your opportunities and possibilities for a successful future.”

Washington said this year’s event is an opportunity for everyone in the community to join in a day of fellowship and fun in a festive atmosphere.

“We come together as friends, neighbors, families and community in a spirit of unity and harmony, Washington said.  “This is the spirit that has kept us together for the past 11 years.”

The festival, co-sponsored by Community Outreach 200, Inc., will run from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Activities will be located in the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Wadsworth Avenue, between Cheltenham and Michener Avenues.  The event is free to the public.  The rain date is September 17th.

The event will be broadcast live by Patty Jackson of WDAS-FM. Community Service awards will be announced at the festivities.  There will be live entertainment throughout the day as well as community and food vendors.              A parade will precede the official opening of the day and will include antique cars, drill teams, and floats with local celebrities. Additionally, there will be free rides, clowns and face painting for the children and free health screenings and refreshments for everyone.

“We have a lot of serious issues facing all of our communities,” Washington said. “This event is a positive example of people and the community working together can achieve.  It’s a good example for our children and creates a spirit of cooperation and camaraderie.

“I look forward to this tradition continuing for many years to come.”

Washington reminds residents to refrain from bringing pets to the event, unless they are service animals, such as seeing-eye dogs.  Bikes and motorbikes also are not permitted within the boundaries of the festival.

“It is important that we keep this event safe for everyone,” Washington said.  “In this way, we can reduce congestion and keep the festival accident-free.”

Both private and non-profit vendors are invited to participate.  Anyone interested in being a vendor for this event must submit a completed application along with the application fee by Friday, September 9, 2006.

Food vendors are reminded to include a copy of their food-vending license with their application.

Application fees paid after September 9th must be made in cash.
