WASHINGTON URGES CHESTNUT HILL NOT TO CLOSE OBSTETRICAL UNIT

Washington

HARRISBURG, April 24: In a letter to M. Brooks Turkel, CEO of the Chestnut Hill Health System, State Sen. LeAnna M. Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) today urged Turkel not to make a final decision regarding the closing of the Chestnut Hill Hospital obstetrical program without consulting her office first.

“I am asking for your commitment to not make a final decision about the program before first notifying my office,” Washington stated.  “I also ask that you continue to engage concerned members of this community and my office in discussions regarding the future of the obstetrics program.”

The letter comes after an early April meeting with hospital officials and members of the Southeastern Pennsylvania Obstetrical Task Force to discuss alternatives and possible solutions before making a final decision regarding the closing of the obstetrics program.

“There is strong support in the community for the continuation of services from the obstetrics program,” Washington stated.  “It is clear to me that more discussions and open dialogue are needed and are important to the future of Chestnut Hill Hospital and the community it serves.”
