PHILADELPHIA, October 22 –
Women Against Abuse in Philadelphia’s board
of directors presented state Sen. LeAnna M.
Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) its
“Civic Leader” award for 2007 at its recent
observance of Domestic Violence Awareness
Month.
Washington was honored for her
commitment and tireless work on behalf of
victims of domestic violence. Her advocacy
efforts have been instrumental in improving
services and the lives of the many
individuals the organization serves.
“I am truly honored to be
recognized by this wonderful organization,”
Washington said. “As a survivor or domestic
violence, I know the struggles that women
and their children endure when they are in
an abusive relationship. They need access to
resources and they need to know that there
is hope.”
October 2007 is Domestic Violence Awareness
Month in Pennsylvania.
According to the Federal Bureau
of Investigation, a woman is beaten every 15
seconds. Approximately 1,800 murders
nationally are attributed to domestic
violence each year.
About 80,000 Pennsylvanians each year are
victims of domestic violence.
“I will continue to support organizations
like Women Against Abuse in Philadelphia and
strive to help families escape domestic
violence,” Washington said. |
