PHILADELPHIA,
February 29 –
State Sen. LeAnna Washington
(D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) said she is
honored to receive a leadership award from a
local charter school.
The senator accepted "The Power
of Nommo Servant Leadership Award" during a
ceremony today at the
Khepera
Charter School, a K-8 academy that serves
2,500 students in Philadelphia.
“I am honored and humbled to be
selected to receive this award from such a
revered institution in the community,”
Washington said. “I hope to continue to be a
leader in the community for all my
constituents, but especially our children,
who are our future community leaders.”
The award, according to the school’s
principal, Dr. Ayesha Imani, is given to a
person “who has used their voice to uplift
and make a difference in people's lives.”
The senator has the spirit of “a servant
leader,” Dr. Imani said. “She uses her voice
to do good. She leads by doing service.”
The word “Nommo” describes “the spoken word”
in the African tradition, Dr. Imani said.
Washington "speaks truth to power… she is
making a powerful difference in our
community,” she said.
“Institutions like the
Khepera
Charter School are incredibly important to
our children’s development and growth and
understanding of the world and their place
in the universe,” Washington said. “Dr.
Imani’s leadership is in an important reason
why the school and its students thrive. She
is an educational role model in the
tradition of our foremothers.” |
