DIGITAL CONVERTER BOX APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE IN WASHINGTON’S OFFICE

            PHILADELPHIA, March 5 -- With less than a year until the switch to an all-digital TV format, state Sen. LeAnna Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) said constituents can pick up an application to receive coupons for a free TV converter box at her Philadelphia district office.

“The transition to digital will provide a better viewing experience for consumers and free up frequencies for emergency responders,” Washington said. “My staff and I stand ready to help constituents sign up to receive coupons for a free digital converter box, as well as answer questions about the TV conversion.”

Washington reminded people that televisions connected to cable, satellite or other pay services do not need a converter box to receive programs.

Beginning February 17, 2009, the Digital Television Transition and Public Safety Act requires TV stations to stop broadcasting in analog format and broadcast only in digital.  All analog televisions receiving over-the-air programming, meaning households receiving television by antenna or "rabbit ears," will need to take one of the following actions:

·         Buy a converter box that will plug into your current TV to change digital broadcasts into analog format for older television sets;

·         Buy a TV with a digital tuner; or

·         Connect the analog TV to cable, satellite or other pay service.

The TV Converter Box Program was created for people who want to continue using their analog TVs.  Between Jan. 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009, U.S. households will be able to use up to two $40 coupons to help defer the cost of a certified converter box.

            Sen. Washington’s Philadelphia district office is located at: 1555-D Wadsworth Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19150, (215) 242-0472.
