WASHINGTON RESOLUTION COMMEMORATES ‘NATIONAL CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY’

Washington

HARRISBURG, May 9 - The state Senate unanimously passed a resolution, sponsored by state Sen. LeAnna Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery), designating May 8, 2008 as ‘National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day’ in Pennsylvania.

“Today is a day to call attention to this “silent epidemic” in our country, that knows no racial, gender, or political barriers,” Washington said.  “This resolution also recognizes the institutions and organizations that work diligently towards finding cures for mental illnesses.”

Washington said four million children and adolescents in America are affected by emotional, behavioral and mental illnesses, and most of these disorders begin before the age of 14.  Twenty percent of children ages 9 to 17 have a diagnosable mental or addictive disorder that causes at least minimal impairment.
