HARRISBURG, June 3 - The Achieving Independence Center recently honored state Sen. LeAnna Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) for her support and commitment to foster youth at the “May is Foster Care Month Celebration”.

The event honored individuals who have worked to improve the lives of youth in foster care and have made improvements in the field of child welfare.

Washington was the recipient of the "Flame" award for her advocacy on behalf of foster youth.

“Helping children is my true passion, and these honors recognizing my work are near and dear to my heart,” Washington said.  “I will continue to work for these children in the legislature to ensure that they meet their potential and enjoy quality life experiences.”

The Three Rivers Adoption Council and the Pennsylvania State Resource Family Association with a “Permanency Advocate of the Year Award” also recently honored Washington for her work and dedication to foster children.

Washington is currently sponsoring two bills (SB 1245 and SB 1246) that would allow children to stay in foster care until they are 21, instead of age 18.
