PHILADELPHIA LAWMAKERS PLAN, ENCOURAGE HAITIAN AID

Washington

HARRISBURG, January 15 State Sen. LeAnna Washington and state Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown today announced that they plan to mobilize state and local leaders to help respond to the massive earthquake that devastated the Caribbean country of Haiti and caused an estimated 50,000 deaths on Tuesday.

“In these incredibly tragic times that the people of Haiti are coping with, we need to do anything we can to help them rebuild their country and rebuild their lives,” Washington said.  “I understand budgets are tight, but these people need our assistance and every little bit will go a long way.  Please keep the people of Haiti in your thoughts and prayers.”

“Our brothers and sisters in Haiti are growing more desperate by the hour and need our help,” Lowery Brown said. “It’s time for us to rally together and come to the aid of people who are truly in need.”

Washington said that she will be using her district office as a drop-off site for medical supplies, water, and infant supplies to be sent to the victims in Haiti. Her district office is located at 1555 Wadsworth Ave. in Philadelphia.

Additionally, Washington said if you are looking for a way to donate immediately, the American Red Cross has instituted a text message donation system that allows you to text "HAITI" to the number 90999 to donate $10, which will be added to your next cell phone bill.

Tuesday’s 7.0-magnitude quake was Haiti's worst in two centuries, and struck 10 miles southwest of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
