WASHINGTON TO PARTICIPATE IN HEALTHY HEART
EXPO
|

Washington |
HARRISBURG,
January 28
—
Kicking off “American Heart Month,”
State Sen. LeAnna Washington
(D-Montgomery/Philadelphia) will team up
with the American Heart Association for the
Healthy Heart Expo.
The expo will take place on Tuesday,
February 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the East
Wing Rotunda of the Main Capitol Building.
A news conference will be held at noon on
February 2 to commemorate “American Heart
Month” and “Wear Red for Women Day.”
“Nearly 37 percent of all female deaths in
America occur from cardiovascular disease (CVD),
which includes coronary heart disease,
stroke and other cardiovascular diseases,”
Washington said. “CVD is a particularly
important problem among minority women. The
death rate due to CVD is substantially
higher in black women than in white women.
“I remain committed to educating women on
the risks to their health and longevity
posed by cardiovascular disease. I hope to
see you all at the Healthy Heart Expo.”
Washington added that it is imperative that
minority men and women take steps to reduce
their risk of heart attack and stroke, as
racial and ethnic minority populations
confront more barriers to CVD diagnosis and
care, receive lower quality treatment, and
experience worse health outcomes than their
white counterparts. CVD also accounts for
about one-third of the disparity in
potential life-years lost between blacks and
whites.
“Because of the added risk
factors for minorities, taking steps to
prevent cardiovascular disease is critical
to our well being,” Washington said. “We
must make it a priority not only to learn
the warning signs of heart attack and
stroke, but to talk to our healthcare
providers on ways to improve our health and
lower our risk.”
