COSTA ANNOUNCES GRANT FOR CARNEGIE LIBRARY

HARRISBURG,
January 15
–
State Sen. Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) announced
today a more than half-million dollar grant
for a Carnegie Library branch.
The South Side Branch Library will be
getting $575,000 for interior and exterior
renovations, Costa said.
“The economy has been extremely difficult on
public institutions that rely on public and
private donations,” Costa said. “If we
intend to keep Pittsburgh as one of the
nation’s most literate cities, we have to
find ways to keep libraries open and
information flowing to their patrons.”
The money is being awarded through
Pennsylvania’s Keystone Recreation Park and
Conservation Fund Library Facilities Program
and is distributed through the state
Department of Education. Education
Secretary Gerald L. Zahorchak announced the
award today.
The news comes ten days after Pennsylvania
approved new table games legislation that is
also expected to generate $850,000 annually
for local libraries.
“I’m proud we have been able to find ways to
keep libraries operating during these
difficult times,” Costa said. “These
facilities are an investment in our shared
future. An informed and literate workforce
is the best way to attract the best jobs.”
