FERLO CALLS FOR PENNDOT TO SUSPEND WEEKDAY BLASTING ALONG ROUTE 28

Ferlo

HARRISBURG, April 15 - State Sen. Jim Ferlo (D-Pittsburgh) today called upon PennDot Secretary Allen Biehler and District 11 Executive Dan Cessna to cease blasting of the rock face above Route 28 during the workweek.

The Senator wants blasting to be done on the weekend when less traffic would be disturbed.

Citing the traffic delays today after an unexpected amount of rock material was sent tumbling onto the highway, “Route 28 is far too important to commercial and daily commuter traffic to risk continued rock slides due to blasting,” Senator Ferlo said.  “I strongly encourage PennDot to rethink its schedule for reshaping the rock face by doing this type of work on the weekends when there is significantly less traffic on the road and less effect on surrounding businesses.”

Senator Ferlo also pointed out that these types of unexpected rockslides after weekday blasts are major public safety concerns that are amplified by the increased traffic during the workweek.

“We have to take every measure possible to ensure that the public can travel safely to and from work,” Ferlo said. “By moving the blasting hours to the weekend we can significantly reduce the potential for injuries.”
