HARRISBURG, May 12 - In response to the
Pittsburgh Police Department’s tragic loss
last week of Officer Aulf, a highly trained
police dog, State Sen. Jim Ferlo
(D-Pittsburgh) today announced that he has
secured a $10,000 DCED grant for the
Pittsburgh Police Department. The grant is
intended to secure and train another dog in
the K-9 Unit patrolling the streets of
Pittsburgh as soon as possible.
“As we observed the memorial service for
this valuable member of our local Police
force this past week-end we are reminded of
the valor and vital police protection we as
citizens are provided on a 24 hour basis, in
our homes and communities, Senator Ferlo
said.
The funding can be used in any manner the
Pittsburgh Police Department deems
appropriate to secure, train, house and
deploy a new police canine. Under state
statute it is a felony in the third degree
to torture, mutilate, injury, disable,
poison or kill a police animal. This
includes dogs as well as police horses. |
