PHILADELPHIA, February 12 – State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Phila.) was chosen as acting Senate Democratic Caucus Secretary.

“I would like to thank Senator Robert Mellow and my colleagues for entrusting me with this esteemed position,” Hughes said.  “It is truly an honor to be appointed caucus secretary and I promise to perform my duties with the same efficiency and dignity of my predecessor.”

Sen. Mellow tapped Hughes to fill the position after Sen. Gerald J. LaValle (D-Beaver), who previously served as secretary, was chosen as acting Democratic chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The Caucus Secretary serves an important function by shepherding executive nominations through the Senate, and negotiating with the Rendell administration and the Senate Republicans throughout the confirmation process.

There are over 200 boards and commissions across Pennsylvania with appointments negotiated by the Democratic Caucus Secretary.
