WHAT:    Sen. Hughes’ Demonstration of Oral HIV Testing

WHEN:    Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at 3:00 p.m.

WHERE:  Capitol Media Center, Harrisburg, PA

DETAILS: In recognition of National HIV Testing Day, state Sen. Vincent J. Hughes (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) will demonstrate the speed and simplicity of an HIV testing device developed by a Pennsylvania company.

At a news conference Wednesday in the state Capitol Media Center, Hughes will self-administer the quick and bloodless “OraQuick Advance” HIV antibody test.

Hughes is among the nation’s leading HIV/AIDS prevention advocates and has spoken internationally about his efforts. He will be joined by state Secretary of Health Dr. Calvin Johnson along with legislative colleagues and local HIV testing advocates.  They will discuss strategies for reaching the thousands of Pennsylvanians who have contracted HIV but do not yet know it.

The OraQuick test was developed by OraSure Technologies Inc., of Bethlehem, Pa.  The test involves taking an oral fluid sample with a swab that is then inserted into a testing device.  The results are available in 20 minutes.

Hughes said news of the development of faster, easier testing methods has been slow in reaching communities most affected by the disease.

Media coverage is invited and encouraged.
