Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Hughes, political leaders and health officials will join together to focus on the needs of individuals and families who suffer from the devastating impact of behavioral [mental] health issues that remain silent and untreated.

Participants will spotlight Breaking the Silence 2007: A Summit on Behavioral Health within the African-American Community -- a groundbreaking two-day forum that will examine a host of important issues related to family dynamics, including the impact of rage, anger, stress and frustration on the community, living beyond boundaries, and children’s and adolescent health.

“If we don’t address the issue head-on, we lessen our capacity to identify healthy outcomes. I believe that with information, comes hope and with hope, comes healing.  We all must make a commitment to grapple with tough issues in our society to ensure that our community is healthy and whole,” stated Sen. Hughes.

The Summit will be held on December 7th and 8th at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.  More than 90 workshops and panel discussions will be presented.  In addition to numerous local experts, it will feature a line-up of nationally acclaimed speakers including: author Dr. Michael Eric Dyson; physician, Dr. Therman Evans; author, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu; actress, Jenifer Lewis; psychiatrist, Dr. Alvin Poussaint, psychologist, Dr. Robin L. Smith; and author Susan L. Taylor. For more information about the Summit, call (215) 471-3500 or visit www.breakingthesilenceonline.org.
