PHILADELPHIA, May 26 State Sen. Shirley M. Kitchen and Da-Network Housing will host a free informational expo for prospective homebuyers and current homeowners on Saturday, June 3 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Grover Washington, Jr. Middle School, located at 201 East Olney Avenue.

“So many people want to reap the economic benefits of homeownership,” said Kitchen (D-Philadelphia). “Still, there are many pitfalls that trip up new homebuyers and many unscrupulous individuals out there that are looking to take advantage of unsuspecting families.

“This event will provide young people with the facts they need before they purchase their first home. Also, families and seniors that already own their own home will learn about their options.”

Danette James, the founder and executive director of Da-Network Housing, cited estimates by the People’s Emergency Center that almost 4,000 families in Philadelphia are homeless. In addition, the U.S. Census Bureau has found that Philadelphia has a high percentage (38 percent) of low-income homeowners.

“Looking at the statistics, our communities need help,” said James. “We need to do everything we can. The Homebuyer’s and Homeowner’s Expo will provide education and information about housing programs that are available.

“Part of Da-Network Housing’s vision is to educate, empower, and promote self-sufficiency. As the executive director of the organization, I chose to partner with state Senator Shirley M. Kitchen because she strongly believes in educating, empowering, and promoting self-sufficiency.”

The expo will feature workshops on the following topics:

  • First-time homebuyers club

  • Alternative home lending programs

  • Take Charge of Your Credit – Fighting back against identity theft

  • Reverse Mortgage – Is it the right option for you?

  • New bankruptcy law

  • Estate Planning – The difference between a will and a living will

  • Foreclosure

  • How to avoid predatory loans and qualify for refinancing loans with low interest rates

  • Home improvement.

Free childcare, youth activities, lunch, and giveaways will be provided. Interested individuals may pre-register for this event by calling (215) 927-3227 or visiting www.danetworkhousing.org.
