HARRISBURG, August 8 --- State Sen.
Shirley Kitchen today announced that now
Pennsylvanians with a driver's license or
photo identification card can register
online to become an organ donor.
“Organ donors are lifesavers and
currently there are not enough, with only
43% of those eligible enrolled as donors,”
Kitchen said. “By making the program more
convenient and accessible, we hope to
increase the number of donors statewide so
the waiting list for organs will not be as
long.”
Previously, Pennsylvanians only had the
opportunity to become registered organ
donors when obtaining or renewing a driver's
license or photo identification card. This
process, for most individuals, occurred
every four years.
Interested individuals can register online
via the Pennsylvania Department of
Transportation's Driver and Vehicle Services
Web site at
www.dmv.state.pa.us.
More than 6,400 people throughout
Pennsylvania are waiting for a life-saving
organ transplants and at least 63% of those
waiting will wait for more than a year for
the necessary transplant. |
