HARRISBURG, September 12 -- With the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program’s income limits being raised from $15,000 to $35,000, State Sen. Shirley Kitchen (D-Philadelphia) is encouraging senior citizens to sign up now to have an application mailed to them early next year.

“We were able to make an additional 400,000 people eligible for rebates with these income limit raises,” Kitchen said. “By signing up now, it will help assure that an application is mailed to you when they become available next February.”

By virtue of the recently enacted property tax relief law, the income limit for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program was more than doubled to $35,000 (only half of income earned from Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, and Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits counts as income under the program).

Kitchen said seniors can sign up for a rebate application now either online at www.papropertytaxrelief.com or by calling toll-free at 1-888-222-9190.

The rebate checks would be issued in July 2007, based on property taxes or rent paid during 2006. Those eligible for the program are Pennsylvanians 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with permanent disabilities over 18 years of age.
