PHILADELPHIA,
June 26
–
New high school teachers of economics can
take advantage of an opportunity to learn
more about teaching their subject, according
to state Sen. Shirley Kitchen.
The Right Start: An Institute for New and
Beginning Teachers of Economics
is designed to help teachers identify and
learn basic economic content and develop
lesson plans for effectively teaching a high
school economics course. It will be held
from Oct. 27 to 30 in Gettysburg.
“This is an excellent opportunity for new
teachers to improve on their course and even
gain graduate credit hours,” Kitchen said.
“I encourage economics teachers to attend
and I urge principals to pass along this
news to their staff.”
The conference, which is offered by
EconomicsPA, in conjunction with the
Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE), is
structured as a business conference, with
emphasis on economic content appropriate for
high school classrooms. It will incorporate
a blend of learning activities, including
hands-on classroom activities and
simulations.
The Right Start is for new teachers of
economics with three years of economics
teaching experience or less. Participants
will receive Act 48 credits and will have
the ability to gain two graduate credit
hours in economics from the Florida Gulf
Coast University.
FTE will cover the cost of registration,
lodging, materials, some meals and a teacher
substitute fee. An expense honorarium will
be paid if lodging is not required.
Participants will only be responsible for
round trip transportation to and from the
meeting site and a limited number of meals.
Space is limited to 30 teachers on a
first-come, first-serve basis. Applications
are available online at
