PHILADELPHIA, August 16 – The City of Philadelphia has been awarded significant state funding to improve its recycling program, according to state Sen. Shirley Kitchen.

The $1.4 million grant will be used to help the city increase the amount of materials recovered through recycling and to aid in job creation and market expansion.

The funding amount is based on the 131,000 tons recycled for calendar year 2005 and the city’s population.

“Philadelphians are doing a fantastic job of reducing waste by recycling,” Kitchen said. “I’m pleased that the city is being rewarded for its efforts through this funding.”

This grant is in addition to the funds that the state Department of Environmental Protection allocates to maintain the city’s recycling program.
