KITCHEN ASKS TEMPLE TO HOLD OFF ON EMPLOYEE HOMEOWNERSHIP

HARRISBURG, October 2 – State Sen. Shirley M. Kitchen (D-Phila.) today asked that Temple University hold off on its Employee Homeownership Program, which would help university workers become homeowners in the North Philadelphia neighborhoods surrounding the school.

Kitchen said that due to the many questions swirling around the program, Temple should hold off on its implementation until all questions are answered.

“This program has come as a surprise to most citizens in this community,” Kitchen said. “I have concerns because very little information has been provided.

“I am asking that Temple hold off on the program until they have had a chance to talk to the community. The community needs to be informed and that information should be in writing from Temple.”

Many of the homes that Temple has marked for the program are already occupied. Kitchen said questions on why homeowners are being asked to give up their homes is something the university has yet to answer.

The $500,000 program was announced this week and would provide $4,000 to $5,000 in loans to Temple employees toward the purchase of single family homes in the eight zip codes surrounding the main and health science campuses of the university.

“Anyone who has been involved with this issue knows that the university has grown and thrived because of the citizens of this community,” Kitchen said.  “They deserve better.”
