KITCHEN: EVERYONE MUST FILE TAXES TO GET ECONOMIC STIMULUS CHECKS

PHILADELPHIA, March 18: State Sen. Shirley Kitchen today reminded her constituents that they must fill out a 2007 federal income tax return in order to receive an economic stimulus rebate, even if a household income does not meet the filing threshold.

“There are many individuals, especially senior citizens who live on Social Security earnings, who aren’t required to file federal tax returns. Regardless, the Internal Revenue Services needs a return from everyone who wants a rebate,” said Kitchen (D-Philadelphia). “Luckily, constituents who have not filed a return still have a little time before the April 15 deadline, and help is available.”

Starting in May, the U.S. Department of the Treasury will send economic stimulus rebates to more than 130 million individuals and families, according to the IRS. Taxpayers must have a valid Social Security number, at least $3,000 in qualified income and file a 2007 federal tax return to receive a payment, the IRS said.

Millions of retirees, disabled veterans and low-wage workers across the country are exempt from filing a tax return; however, they must file a tax return this year in order to receive a stimulus payment, according to the IRS.

“Individuals who haven’t filed a federal tax return because of their income threshold but want a rebate can receive free help on preparing their taxes,” Kitchen said.

Free federal and state tax-preparation assistance is available for low- and moderate-income taxpayers 60 and older from the AARP Tax-Aide Program. Call 1-888-687-2277 for locations.

And for those who want to electronically file their tax return, the IRS is offering “FREE File” specifically for people who have no legal requirement to file a tax return but must file a return this year in order to receive a 2008 economic stimulus payment.
