PHILADELPHIA,
February 23
–
To celebrate literacy and promote reading,
state Sen. Shirley Kitchen will join
state Sen. Christine Tartaglione, Linda
Harrison, mother of Indianapolis Colts wide
receiver Marvin Harrison, and other members
of the Professional Football Players Mothers
Association to kick off Read Across America
at a local charter school.
“This is such a fun event to celebrate, and
I’m pleased that I was invited to join in
celebrating Read Across America,” Kitchen
said. “It’s an opportunity to meet a
wonderful group of students and spend
quality time reading stories to them, and
I’m looking forward to it.”
Kitchen and the NFL mothers will join
students at Community Academy Charter School
on Friday, Feb. 27 at noon at the school,
located at 1100 E. Erie Ave.
Read Across America is a nationwide
celebration that centers around the birthday
of children’s author Dr. Seuss. Throughout
the week, students at Community Academy
Charter School will be participating in
activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss and the
gift of reading, including inviting guest
readers.
“As a mother who read to my children when
they were young, I look forward to sitting
with the students and sharing stories with
them,” Kitchen said. “The connection of an
adult reading to a child is profound, so I
hope that the students discover a love for
reading, as well as a desire to spend time
reading together with their parents.
“Linda Harrison and the NFL moms are
wonderful role models for the students, so
I’m pleased to be working with them,” she
said.
