PHILADELPHIA, January 13 — State Sen. Shirley Kitchen will join local community leaders, trauma survivors, ex-offenders, recovering addicts and homeless individuals in a Speak Out at  Girard College on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 18, in honor of the late civil rights leader and humanitarian.

“Dr. King continues to inspire so many people, and this Speak Out is a reminder of how far we’ve come in the civil rights movement,” Kitchen said. “I’m honored to be invited to honor his legacy with people from all walks of life during this year’s Day of Service.”

“Dr. King championed solutions to homelessness, poverty, mental illness, prisoner rights and drug addiction,” said William Webb, Pro Act’s community organizer. “We are mobilizing community organizations to refocus on humanitarian issues that demand long term remedies.”

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a clean-up project at Winchester Playground, located at 15th and York streets. Then, a rally will be held at the Martin Luther King Center, located at 21st Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue, followed by a march at 10:30 a.m. to Girard College, at 20th Street and Girard Avenue. The event will continue from noon to 2 p.m. in the Girard College campus chapel with various speakers.

The march to Girard College commemorates the historic mid-1960s protest of the school, which, at the time, refused to admit black students.

The event is sponsored by Pro-Act (Pennsylvania Recovery Organization — Achieving Community Together).
