UPPER MERION, January 14 – State Sen. Daylin Leach (D-Delaware/Montgomery) last night recognized three honorees for their outstanding contributions to the community at the 22nd Annual Upper Merion Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Celebration.

Leach presented former state Sen. Connie Williams (D-Delaware/Montgomery) with the 210 Humanitarian Award for her work with Steppingstone Scholars and for her efforts for the advancement of women; the 2010 Community Service Award to Upper Merion Middle School Junior Optimist Club for volunteer service; and honored David Broida for his service to the MLK Committee, local community and his leadership with the Junior Optimists.

“The focus of this year’s celebration was character, service and leadership,” Leach said. “All of the award recipients embody each of these characteristics and serve as models to our community. I am honored to present a symbol of our gratitude to these individuals who so proudly represent the same values held dear by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

The celebration, which began in 1989, was arranged by the Upper Merion Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Committee. Committee members noted that the purpose of the annual remembrance event is to honor those who exude superior character, service and leadership within the community.

According to its mission statement, the committee “believes that peace, justice and harmony are everybody’s responsibility. We offer an opportunity for all people to recognize and fulfill this responsibility. In addition to spotlighting the life, work and philosophy of Dr. King, we use the occasion of his birthday to highlight the cultural diversity and harmony present in Upper Merion Township.”
