Leach to debate same-sex marriage rights at free public event

HARRISBURG, February 4 – State Senator Daylin Leach (D-Delaware/Montgomery) announced that he will debate Marriage Equality Monday night at a free public event held at Harrisburg Area Community College.

Leach, prime sponsor of SB 935, which would provide for full marriage rights between same-sex couples, will debate Maggie Gallagher of the National Organization for Marriage. Previously, Leach made national and international news when he debated the issue with Pastor Bill Devlin and Sen. John Eichelberger, who introduced SB 707 to define the term "marriage" as a union between one man and one woman.

“I am looking forward to a spirited discourse on the issue with Ms. Gallagher,” Leach said. “The legislature is at a unique point where it must decide between dueling bills: my bill that would recognize same-sex marriages, and another bill that would put into law a strict definition of what the term 'marriage' means. By arguing our sides in a public forum, we’ll be able to raise awareness about this important matter and, hopefully, better educate the residents of Pennsylvania about it.”

Sponsored by HACC Allies and The Center for Global Education at HACC, the debate is part of the Freedom to Marry Week event line up. More information about Freedom to Marry Week can be found here.
