HARRISBURG, March 12 – State Senate
Democratic Leader Robert J. Mellow today
provided the following statement on the
retirement of Sen. Vincent Fumo (D-Phila.):
"From the first time that Vince Fumo walked
onto the Senate floor in 1978 and into the
lives of each one of us, he’s been a
game-changer, a difference-maker and a
fighter.
“Sen. Fumo battled for an increase in the
minimum wage, equity in school funding,
property and wage tax relief and fashioned a
reasonable and balanced gun control law.
For his entire Senate career, Vince Fumo has
taken on tough issues and gotten results.
“Because of his diverse and wide-ranging
interests and life experiences, Senator Fumo
is tough to label. But one thing is
certain: He is dogged defender of the people
he represents in Philadelphia.
“His oratory and candor have made Senate
debates lively, fact-based and compelling.
And, his vast knowledge and leadership on
appropriations issues have helped strike
difficult budget agreements over the
years.
“Vince Fumo has given almost his entire life
to public service. I consider him a friend
and wish him the best in retirement."
