MELLOW PRESENTS EDUCATIONAL, SAFETY GRANTS

Mellow

PECKVILLE, April 15 - State Senate Democratic Leader Robert J. Mellow today announced state grants for two education and youth facilities in Lackawanna County.

            Mellow presented checks totaling $150,000.

The grant recipients include:

·         Lourdesmont/Good Shepherd Youth and Family Services in Clarks Summit.  The non-profit adolescent treatment center, sponsored by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, received a $50,000 grant for emergency repairs.  The goal of that project is to alleviate serious deficiencies to Lourdesmont’s physical plant, which could affect the safety and health of the students.

·         Our Lady of Peace Elementary School in Clarks Summit was awarded $100,000 for its Technology Development Continuum project, which will provide smart boards, projectors, laptop computers and related technology from K-3.  The primary focus of the project is to provide technical training and assistance to the school’s faculty and support staff.

Mellow said Our Lady of Peace also received $15,000 in tuition assistance funding from the BRAVO Foundation, as part of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program. The BRAVO Foundation delivers scholarships to families that meet criteria established by the Commonwealth.

“I’m proud to deliver these funds for important projects to these educational facilities,” Mellow said. “As I have repeated on many occasions, when we invest in our children, we invest in the future. This not only contributes to the education, but the safety of students as well.”

The funds are administered through the Pennsylvania Department of Economic and Community Development.
