MEMORIAL HIGHWAY

TOBYHANNA, February 5
–
The stretch of Route 611 in Monroe County
where the life of Pennsylvania State Trooper
Joshua Miller was cut short will now bear
his name.
“The work ethic and pride which Trooper
Miller displayed in one of the most
difficult and dangerous of all jobs was a
shining example for all,” said Mellow. “I
can only hope those who pass these markers
will take a moment to reflect and give
silent thanks to Trooper Miller. It is a
rare person who displays the courage to put
themselves in danger to preserve the safety
of others.”
Governor Rendell signed Senate Bill 1070
into law in December, designating a portion
of Route 611 from Main Street in Tobyhanna
to Interstate 380 in Coolbaugh Township as
the Trooper Joshua D. Miller Memorial
Highway. The legislation was sponsored by
Senators Robert Mellow and Raphael Musto.
Miller, 34, was fatally wounded June 7 while
attempting to apprehend a kidnapping
suspect. There was an exchange of gunfire
once troopers were able to pull the suspect
over along 611 in Coolbaugh Township.
Trooper Robert Lombardo was injured. Police
were able to recover the 9-year-old boy
unharmed.
“We're reminded of how lucky we are to live
in such a great country and a great state
where we have men and women who are prepared
to protect us so that we can enjoy the level
of comfort and safety we have," Mellow said.
"Unfortunately, it comes at a cost to their
families and loved ones."
Miller’s family members including his wife,
Angela, and three daughters attended the
ceremony.
