Sen. Mellow's statement on the death of former Sen. Hardy Williams

Mellow

HARRISBURG, January 7 “Pennsylvania lost one of its great leaders and statesman today with the passing of Sen. Hardy Williams.

“As a public servant, Sen. Williams fiercely fought for his constituents from Philadelphia. He was kind, compassionate and thoughtful.  Sen. Williams was a man who dedicated his life's work to trying to help those less fortunate.

“As a legislator, Sen. Williams made important contributions and left a lasting imprint on the lives of all Pennsylvanians.  Through his work on welfare reform, health issues and judicial matters, Sen. Williams was a relentless and determined advocate for justice, equality and positive change.

“I had the honor and pleasure of serving with Sen. Williams for many years.  He was a towering presence in the Senate and an unforgettable contributor to Senate floor proceedings. He was a powerful and persuasive speaker who possessed a strong and booming voice that denounced bigotry and fought for equality.

“His work as an advocate for those in need made him an inspirational leader and a force for change.  His efforts to promote independence and encourage greater African-American participation in the electoral process made him a pioneer and a trailblazer for other young community leaders to follow.

“Sen. Hardy Williams was a good friend, trusted ally and a leader that made a difference in people's lives.  He will be greatly missed.  My heartfelt condolences go out to Sen. Williams' family.”
