ANNOUNCES RECREATION GRANTS FOR CARBON AND
LUZERNE

HARRISBURG, December 4 -
State Senator Ray Musto today announced
state grant funds for 10 area recreational
projects.
“These grants are aimed at making more
recreational opportunities available to
local communities,” Musto said. “I will
continue to seek funds that help our
communities encourage quality exercise and
recreation opportunities.”
Musto said the following grants were
awarded:

$12,800 to Carbon County to further develop
the Mauch Chunk Lake Park. Funds will be
used to install a modular play structure,
safety surfacing, and provide handicapped
access.
·
$36,500 to Carbon County to prepare a
“Greenways and Open Space Network Plan.”
·
$48,000 to Weissport Borough to renovate and
further develop the Weissport Community Park
in Carbon County, including installing
playground equipment with a safety surface,
benches, fencing, landscaping and other site
improvements.
·
$35,200 to the Greater Hazleton Area Civic
Partnership for the development of the
Ashmore Pedestrian Bridge.
·
$29,000 to the Greater Hanover Area Park
Commission to renovate and further develop
the Greater Hanover Area Park in Luzerne
County. Funds will be used to pave the
entrance road, parking area and provide
handicapped access.
·
$110,000 to Luzerne County to renovate and
further develop Moon Lake Park in Luzerne
County. Funds will be used to construct
campsites with electricity, fencing, a
concession stand, and resurface the
basketball and tennis courts.
·
$25,000 to Luzerne County to prepare a
master site development plan for the
532-acre Seven Tubs Natural Area in Plains
Township and Laurel Run Borough.
·
$250,000 to the Luzerne County Redevelopment
Authority to develop the Luzerne County
National Recreational Trail between Jenkins
Township and the Luzerne County Court House,
including preparing the design and
specifications to bid the project.
·
$10,000 to the Luzerne County Redevelopment
Authority to develop a park at the site of
the Knox Mine Disaster in Luzerne County.
Funds will be used for clearing, planting,
installing benches, fences, landscaping and
other site improvements.
·
$593,300 to the North Branch Land Trust in
additional funding to help acquire a
conservation easement on 1,415 acres off
Route 115 in Bear Creek Township in Luzerne
County for recreation, watershed protection
and open space.
Musto said the state grants, which will be
administered by the state Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources, are used
to provide technical and financial
assistance to local governments, river and
trail organizations, land trusts and other
nonprofit groups for the planning,
acquisition and development of park,
recreation, conservation and greenways
projects. |
