O’PAKE URGES SENATE ACTION ON RESTAURANT INSPECTION BILL

O'Pake

HARRISBURG, January 26 Senator Michael A. O’Pake, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, today called for Senate action on House-passed legislation (HB 174) intended to strengthen food safety inspections of public eating establishments.

In a letter to Senator Mike Brubaker, the Republican majority chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, O’Pake (D-Berks) said last month’s discovery of “mice infestation” at the privately-run state Capitol cafeteria should serve as a “wake-up call” that the state needs to beef up inspection procedures.

“I am sure you will agree that we must do everything we can in order to make sure that commercial establishments that serve food are safe, clean and comply with the established regulations,” O’Pake wrote in his letter to Senator Brubaker.

O’Pake urged Brubaker to bring House Bill 174 up for consideration by the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee “as soon as possible so we can assure the public that our restaurants are inspected and safe.”

The legislation has been awaiting action by the Senate since its passage by the House last June.
