SEN. STACK URGES TIMELY PASSAGE OF UPCOMING 2010-11 BUDGET

HARRISBURG, February 3 — State Sen. Mike Stack joined his Senate Democratic colleagues at a press conference today in Harrisburg to outline several priorities for the 2010-11 Pennsylvania budget.

The most important priority is passing a balanced budget on time, Stack said.

“It is imperative that we enact a budget by June 30,” Stack said. “It’s a deadline we’ve failed to meet seven years in a row. It’s inexcusable that last year’s budget was 101 days late. The General Assembly must do better this time. Pennsylvania cannot afford a repeat of last year’s impasse.”

In addition to enacting a budget on time, the Senate Democrats also stressed the importance of implementing a budget with no new broad-based tax increases; investing in jobs and economic growth; maintaining our education progress; targeting state resources wisely to save tax dollars; and restructuring, reforming and realigning state programs.

Gov. Ed Rendell will announce the 2010-11 budget on Tuesday, Feb. 9.

“I’m pleased that we’re already starting a conversation on the upcoming budget,” Stack said. “We’re still dealing with a tough economy but we also need to take steps to bring Pennsylvania out of this national recession and into a brighter future.

“I urge my Senate Republican colleagues, as well as the House of Representatives, to waste no time in working on the budget after the governor presents it,” he said.
