WASHINGTON TO SERVE AS CHAIR OF KEY SENATE COMMITTEE

Washington

HARRISBURG, June 22 – State Senator LeAnna M. Washington (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) has been named Democratic Chairwoman of the Senate Aging and Youth Committee.

“I am honored that my fellow Democratic Senators have confidence in me to serve as the Democratic Chairwoman of the Aging and Youth committee,” Washington said.  “I can assure you that the needs and concerns of children and seniors will be of utmost importance to me in Harrisburg.  I will be a strong and consistent advocate.”

Senator Washington will also serve on the committees on:  Public Health and Welfare, Local Government, Communications and Technology, Veterans Affairs, Finance and Policy.

“The diversity of these committee assignments will allow me to focus on improving a wide range of services for my constituents in Philadelphia and Montgomery counties,”  Washington said.

Washington was sworn in earlier this month after easily defeating her Republican opponent in a special election to fill the vacancy in the 4th Senatorial District. Washington will serve the balance of the term.

Washington has been a passionate advocate for seniors, children and families for the past decade.  Some of her top priorities include supporting domestic violence services for women and children, promoting academic excellence, affordable healthcare, new job creation, and economic development.

Additionally, Washington said she is looking at several pieces of gun legislation that will curb violence in the streets.

“Too many of our young people are losing their lives to gun violence and too many of our citizens are victims of violence,” Washington said.  “I want to work with others seeking to address this very troubling problem in the community.”

Washington added that she looks forward to working with all segments of the community.

“I want our community to be a safe place to live, work and raise a family.”
