WOZNIAK VOTES TO MOVE MARRIAGE BILL OUT OF COMMITTEE

Wozniak

HARRISBURG, May 5 - Saying he is comfortable with the updated language in the current version, state Sen. John N. Wozniak today voted to move a proposed constitutional amendment defining marriage out of committee and on to the full Senate for a vote.

“The vast majority of people in my district support this effort to solidify the definition of marriage in Pennsylvania,” Wozniak said. “I am confident that this is an attempt to allow Pennsylvanians to define marriage for themselves without court interference and not an effort aimed to deprive any one group.”

After several acrimonious hearings, Senate Bill 1250 moved from the Senate Appropriations Committee today by a vote of 18 to 8.

The bill is a resolution that would add a section to the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania stating “No union other than a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as marriage or the functional equivalent of marriage by the Commonwealth.”

To amend the Constitution, the General Assembly will have to approve the bill in two consecutive sessions of the Legislature and put it before voters in referendum.

“This bill will allow the people of Pennsylvania to define marriages within their own Commonwealth,” Wozniak said. “While we have the enacted a definition of marriage within Pennsylvania law, it is vulnerable to erosion by federal courts.  We will allow the people to decide.”
