TARTAGLIONE ENCOURAGED BY FRANKFORD AVENUE PROJECT HARRISBURG, May 5, 2004--Although the construction will cause some minor headaches, Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione today praised PennDOT and the Rendell administration for working to improve traffic flow in her district. "These improvements will not only make commuting easier, but safer as well," Tartaglione said. "We can't stimulate the economy and create jobs if we can't get get around." PennDOT began lane restrictions recently in an attempt to improve 43 intersections on Frankford Avenue (Route 13) between Knights Road and Cheltenham Avenue. Construction began in January and is expected to be completed by mid-November. Crews are installing a computerized closed-loop traffic signal system, new signals and mast arms. The new system will give the city control over traffic flow and will help alleviate congestion during peak traffic times. "The road system in Philadelphia was laid out in the 17th century," Tartaglione said. "These improvements will bring Frankford Avenue into the 21st century and help keep our region's traffic and economy running efficiently." State funds will be used to pay the estimated $2.5 million cost. Detailed information on the improvements can be found by going to www.dot.state.pa.us - 30 - |
