HARRISBURG, November 16, 2007 -- Dozens of local seniors turned out yesterday to get free flu shots during the first of two flu shot clinics sponsored by Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione. “The old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure could not be more accurate when it comes to flu,” Tartaglione said. “With the cost of health care spiraling, it is more important than ever to prevent problems before they start.” Yesterday’s flu shot clinic was held at Temple University’s Episcopal Campus on Lehigh Avenue. It drew a crowd of seniors who saved the time and money by dropping by to get their shot and chat about health care and other issues with Sen. Tartaglione. “The annual flu shot clinics are among my favorite events of the year,” Tartaglione said. “It’s becoming a holiday season tradition and it really brings home for me the ‘public’ in public service.” Seniors and individuals with lung disease or impaired immune systems can suffer serious – and even deadly -- complications from the flu. Tartaglione is a Senate leader on women’s health issues, promoting awareness of the prevalence of heart disease and breast cancer, as well as working with state officials to help young people begin careers in the healthcare field. She began organizing flu shot clinics at her district office several years ago when seniors reported difficulty in finding a doctor who had an adequate supply of vaccine. A second flu shot clinic will be held on Thursday, November 29, 9:30 a.m. until noon at Sen. Tartaglione’s District Office, 1061 Bridge Street, Philadelphia.
