TARTAGLIONE NAMED TO SENATE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE

HARRISBURG, JANUARY 16, 2007 – State Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione has been appointed to the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, Democratic leaders announced today.

Tartaglione, who also serves as Democratic Chair of the Senate Labor and Industry Committee, said the new post will give her stronger input on nearly all important legislation, including the state budget.

“It’s an enormous opportunity, but also a tremendous responsibility,” Tartaglione said.  “Pennsylvania is facing some serious challenges and I’m honored to be chosen to help the Senate prepare for the future.”

The Appropriations Committee makes financial decisions for the Senate and must approve any legislation that requires spending state money.

Tartaglione was recently overwhelmingly elected to her fourth term and has been honored for her representation of Pennsylvania workers.

“Senator Tartaglione’s experience and judgment make her well qualified for this important job,” said Senate Democratic Leader Robert J. Mellow. “We need people who can work well together with Senators from across Pennsylvania and across party lines.”

Last year, Tartaglione steered a compromise through the Senate that resulted in the first adjustment of Pennsylvania’s minimum wage in nearly a decade.

“I am looking forward to the challenge of crafting a careful state budget,” Tartaglione said. “Working together we can achieve solutions to even our most difficult challenges.”
