TARTAGLIONE URGES WORKERS TO GET WALKING

HARRISBURG, APRIL 17, 2007 – Continuing her effort to improve the heart health of Pennsylvanians, state Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione today introduced a resolution recognizing “Start! Walking at Work Day” in Pennsylvania.

The resolution supports the American Heart Association’s program to encourage Pennsylvanians to take some time each day to simply take a walk.

“In addition to increased life expectancy, regular walking has many proven benefits for an individual’s overall health,” Tartaglione said. “Walking can lower both bad cholesterol and high blood pressure and reduce the risk of stroke.”

More than a million Americans suffer a heart attack each year, Tartaglione said.

The resolution declares April 25 as “Start! Walking at Work Day,” in Pennsylvania.  Tartaglione has also been a supporter of the “Go Red for Women” campaign, intended to remind women that cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of women.

“By increasing awareness of the importance of physical activity to reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease, we can save thousands of lives each year,” she said.
