TARTAGLIONE RESOLUTION MARKS VICTIMS' RIGHTS WEEK

HARRISBURG, April 1, 2008 – The Pennsylvania Senate today unanimously approved a resolution by Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione recognizing "Crime Victims’ Rights Week" in Pennsylvania.

"By recognizing Crime Victims’ Rights Week, we bring attention to the need to ensure that victim services are available for underserved segments of our population, including crime victims with disabilities, victims with mental illness, elderly victims, victims in rural areas and victims of hate crimes," Tartaglione said in a speech on the Senate floor today. We make our homes, our neighborhoods and our communities safer and stronger when we help the victims of crime rebuild their lives.

Tartaglione noted that every 22.1 seconds a violent crime is committed in the United States and that each year 23 million Americans become victims of crime – 5.2 million of those occurrences are violent crimes.

Crime victim’s week will be observed in Pennsylvania the week of April 13 to 19.   The week coincides with National Crime Victims’ Rights week, which has been observed for more than 25 years.
