Hughes Elected To Democratic
Leadership Position

State Sen. Vincent Hughes was elected Senate Democratic Caucus Chair, a key position on the Senate Democratic Leadership team.

Hughes is the senior senator from Philadelphia and the senior African-American senator in the Pennsylvania Senate.  As caucus chair, Hughes will play a pivotal role in setting the senate’s legislative agenda.

“Finding jobs, improving our education system, providing health insurance to the uninsured, advancing our state in energy related and green technology, and rebuilding our communities and keeping them safe, are issues that we must confront.” 

As caucus chair, Hughes will continue to build legislative support for "main street" concerns that most profoundly affect the lives of Pennsylvanians. 

Senator Hughes is committed to using his newly elected leadership position to rally support around such pressing issues as foreclosure reform, health care and a statewide economic stimulus plan that gets Pennsylvanians back to work. "The role of Caucus Chairman requires me to provide a detailed analysis to each Democratic senator and a detailed analysis of every piece of legislation that makes it to the voting calendar. This also includes the State Budget," Hughes said.  “It will also enable me to advance the agendas of our Democratic Senators.  I am humbled by my colleagues’ support for me in this new position.”
