Welcome to another edition of Northeast
Notes! Now that the spring weather has
finally set in, more people will be taking
advantage of warmer temperatures and
extended daylight to go outside and enjoy a
walk, a bike ride or a hike through
Pennypack Park. I encourage everyone to get
out and enjoy this pleasant time. It’s great
exercise for adults, kids and pets alike,
but it’s also a nice opportunity for
families to do an outdoor activity together.
I also caution motorists to drive safely
through the neighborhoods and be mindful of
their surroundings, especially in areas
where children are playing. Finally, I
encourage parents to teach their children
simple safety techniques, like wearing bike
and skateboard protective gear and the
proper ways to safely cross the street.
As always, check out the latest news and
information on my Web site,

Honoring Our Officers During
National Police Week
The week of May 10 to 16 is “National Police
Week” and May 4 is “Police Officers Memorial
Day” in Pennsylvania. It’s a time to
recognize and thank our Philadelphia police
officers for their efforts to keep the peace
in our community, as well as memorialize our
fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price
for our safety.
Pennsylvania honored the eight
Pennsylvania
police officers who were killed in the line
of duty in 2008 at the annual Police
Memorial Ceremony on May 4 at the state
Capitol.
Four of the those fallen officers — Sgt.
Timothy Simpson, Sgt. Patrick McDonald, Sgt.
Stephen Liczbinski and Officer Isabel
Nazario — were from the Philadelphia Police
Department and either lived or worked in
Northeast Philadelphia.
It was a moving tribute and an important
reminder that our police officers put their
lives on the line every day. |

Stack Named Chairman of Program
Performance Sub-committee
Pennsylvania is facing a massive budget
deficit and our citizens are relying more on
state services, so we need to look at how
effectively and efficiently our agencies are
operating.
I have been
appointed the Democratic chairman of the
Senate Appropriations Sub-committee on
Program Performance, a new five-member
panel that will evaluate the performance of
Pennsylvania’s departments and state-run
programs.
The sub-committee will work to increase
state departments’ accountability and
transparency; identify outcomes and public
benefits of the various departments and
their programs; and determine whether a
department is measuring whether or not a
program is achieving its goals and helping
the public.
We must make sure our tax dollars are being
spent wisely, and this new sub-committee
will help our state departments achieve
their goals in the best possible ways. |
