PASSED THE SENATE

 

 

HB 500, PN 3216: This bill amends the “Medical Practice Act” to provide for a statutory licensing mechanism for perfusionists.  Professional perfusionists are health care workers who play a critical role during open-heart surgery by operating the heart-lung machine, cardiac and pulmonary support devices, and blood salvaging equipment.  HB 500 is part of a two-bill package (HB 500 & HB 501) to statutorily codify the licensing of perfusionists.  Senator Wonderling offered Amendment A06940, which ensures that perfusionists will be represented on the State Board of Medicine.  The amendment was agreed to and the bill went over as amended.

HB 501, PN 3638: This bill amends the “Medical Practice Act” to provide for a statutory licensing mechanism for perfusionists.  Professional perfusionists are health care workers who play a critical role during open-heart surgery by operating the heart-lung machine, cardiac and pulmonary support devices, and blood salvaging equipment.  HB 501 is part of a two-bill package (HB 500 & HB 501) to statutorily codify the licensing of perfusionists.  The bill passed 45-4.

SB 684, PN 2009: This legislation creates the Public Health Child Death Review Act in which State and local review teams will examine the circumstances surrounding deaths of children in Pennsylvania.  The purpose of the program is to promote safety and reduce child fatalities.  The bill passed 49-0.

SR 295, PN 1969: This resolution designates the week of May 18, 2008, as “MRSA Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania.  Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus auerus (MRSA) is a type of staphylococcal infection that is resistant to treatment with the usual antibiotics and infections are often associated with health care both inside and outside of hospitals.  The resolution was adopted.
