HB 500, PN 3216:
This bill amends the “Medical Practice Act” to provide for a statutory
licensing mechanism for perfusionists. Professional perfusionists are
health care workers who play a critical role during open-heart surgery
by operating the heart-lung machine, cardiac and pulmonary support
devices, and blood salvaging equipment. HB 500 is part of a two-bill
package (HB 500 & HB 501) to statutorily codify the licensing of
perfusionists. Senator Wonderling offered Amendment A06940, which
ensures that perfusionists will be represented on the State Board of
Medicine. The amendment was agreed to and the bill went over as
amended.
