THOUSANDS MORE ELIGIBLE FOR PROPERTY TAX OR RENT HELP

Sen. Mellow makes a point during a conference committee meeting last year.  Mellow helped negotiate expanded relief for thousands of PA seniors, while gaming revenues will bring help to all homeowners.

During intense negotiations last year, Senate Democratic Leader Bob Mellow helped forge a compromise that doubled the income eligibility limits for Pennsylvania seniors who need help with property taxes or rent.   The result: Hundreds of thousands of seniors who were not previously eligible can now apply for help.
"I urge all seniors to take a look at the new income limits to see if they qualify for the rebate," Mellow said.
In addition to expanded eligibility, the new tax relief law raises the maximum rebate to $650, eliminating property taxes for many Pennsylvania seniors.

This year, 420,000 more seniors will receive help paying their property taxes or rent, and more than 200,000 seniors will have their school property taxes eliminated. The old income limit, excluding half of Social Security income, was $15,000.  That rises now to $35,00
The maximum rebate was $500. The new law increases the income limit to $35,000 for homeowners and boosts the maximum rebate to $650.

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF FOR ALL HOMEOWNERS

Property taxes for all Pennsylvania homeowners will go down with the use of gaming money.  Unlike the old law, all school districts automatically qualify.
The property tax relief formula that was passed by the legislature two years ago remains the same.  Homeowners in school districts with a high tax burden and low local wealth will receive the greatest relief.                                                                                    READ MORE
