Senator Art Haywood Announces $450,000 in Grants for Montgomery County Water and Sewer Projects
HARRISBURG – March 30, 2017 – Senator Art Haywood today announced $450,000 in grants for projects that focus on water and sewer infrastructure in Abington Township, Cheltenham Township and the Borough of Jenkintown. Each project will greatly enhance its municipality’s ability to provide clean, safe services to residents.
“The issues being addressed in Montgomery County are not solely related to sanitation,” said Senator Haywood. “All infrastructure is interconnected, and in aggregate plays a large role in economic opportunities and development. These funds will not only assist Abington, Cheltenham and Jenkintown in meeting their commitments for an area-wide sewer improvement plan. They also ensure that the commonwealth is fulfilling its role in attending to these needs.
A summary of each project follows:
- Abington Township will use the funds toward inspection and cleaning of thousands of feet of sewer pipe and the testing of more than 3,000 pipe joints, as well as the repair of previously identified defective infrastructure.
- Cheltenham Township will repair an existing sewer main by installing 7,000 feet of piping. These repairs will mitigate the excessive sewer overflows the township has experienced.
- Borough of Jenkintown will use the funds to rehabilitate thousands of feet of sewer mains as well as installing necessary repairs. Rehabilitation of the system in the Runnymede and West Avenue basins will reduce the amount of infiltration and increase conveyance capacity.
Grant funds are made possible through the Commonwealth Financing Authority, an independent arm of the Department of Community and Economic Development.
