HARRISBURG, JUNE 30, 2008 -- Pennsylvanians struggling to find work as the economy falters will now have some breathing room, state Sen. Christine M. Tartaglione announced today. This morning, President Bush signed a bill extending unemployment benefits for an additional 13 weeks. “Tough times require prompt action and I’m happy that the federal government has responded,” Tartaglione said. “I hope this allows working families to breathe easier during the stressful search for new jobs.” State labor officials announced today that Pennsylvanians who are eligible for the additional benefits will be contacted by mail to urge them to apply. Tartaglione said the action would not only help families and support communities, but will stimulate the economy. “Unemployed workers typically spend their money locally on basic needs,” Tartaglione said. “This can be an important boost to local economies.” The bill not only extends benefits for those currently unemployed, but also allows anyone who exhausted their benefit after May 30, 2007 to apply. To be eligible, individuals must have exhausted all rights to regular state compensation and have worked 20 weeks in full-time covered employment or earned the equivalent in covered wages.
